LOCAL FLAVOUR

For many of us, eating out became a rare experience during the lockdowns of 2020. Now, with restrictions beginning to gradually ease, we can once again begin to look forward to celebrating love, life and food with family and friends.
Recommendations in the AUXOIS area
Our featured location is Pouilly-en-Auxois, a large village well served by restaurants, bars, and cafes to suit all tastes.

The Hôtel Restaurant du Commerce, in the Place Pierre et Marie Curie, is a good example. As the name suggests this is a small family-style hotel with a popular restaurant and a bar. Like many, they run a takeaway service with pizza high on the list of family favourites (Editor: No surprises here – I love a good pizza).

By contrast, and just round the corner at 26 Rue René Laforge is the more traditional café style menu to be found at Le Sporting. Popular with tourists and locals, it gets a good recommendation on TripAdvisor.

If you are looking for something completely different and are happy to take a short 2kms trip, there is a touch of American cuisine to be found at Richie’s Diner. Heading south out of Pouilly-en-Auxois on the D977Bis, you will find it at the ZAC Portes de Bourgogne, in Créancey. (Editor: OK, it’s not French-style cooking but the kids will love it… and you know you will too!)

Back in Pouilly-en-Auxois, perhaps the most well-known of all the restaurants is the l’Hôtel de la Poste, located next to the Mairie in the Place de la Libération. This is an old coaching inn dating back to the 18th century with lots of charm but brought up to date as a seven-bedroom hotel. The restaurant specialises in a home-cooking style approach using seasonal produce available in the local markets, so the menu at this stylish eatery changes regularly.

Of course, eating at home is sometimes all you want to do, even if you are on holiday, and for that, you will need bread. There are three local boulangeries: Boulangerie Larouge at 10 Place Pierre et Marie Curie; the Boulangerie Manca at 16 Rue René Laforge, and Aux Délices de Sandrine at 10 Place de la Libération. And if you are searching for something sweet (and sticky), there is a great patisserie, Au Coeur Gourmand at 5 Rue de la République.

In case you thought we had forgotten, a visit to La Cave de Pouilly at 13 rue du Général Leclerc should meet your drinking needs. Specialising in the wines from the region you will also find a wide variety of champagnes, and dare we say it, a good selection of beers. La Cave also organises pre-booked dégustations (wine tasting) events on a Saturday, and during these current cautionary times, they will also deliver your wine order free of charge. Have a look at their website to get a feel for what is on the shelves.
