MUST VISIT

As we continue our tour around Burgundy, a region often referred to as the "Land of fine art and living”, our next stop is a village with a strong and visible connection to France’s turbulent history.
We recommend to visit Châteauneuf-en-Auxois
A visit to Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is to take a trip back in time. It is one of the best examples of 14th century military architecture in the whole of the Burgundy region.

During the 100 Years War, the village was heavily fortified with high walls and towers to defend both the village and watch over the plains of Auxois. Many of these defensive structures exist today (Editor: camera or crayons and easel at the ready) and a tour of the village shows the strong connection between the military and its aristocratic inhabitants from centuries past.

It is easy to see that this was a prosperous place to live. During the 14th-17th centuries, Burgundian merchants built their houses in the village and many of these remain today.

The location of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois overlooking Le Canal de Bourgogne (Burgundy Canal) was critical for these wealthy traders and as a result, the village flourished.

Today, it is a popular tourist stop for a stroll along the narrow streets, where every turn of the corner reveals another picture opportunity. The village is the backdrop for several musical events throughout the year catering for all tastes from classical to modern. Also, there are theatrical productions and exhibitions arranged by the regional arts organisation. The bi-annual marché médiéval (medieval market and festival) is a real treat with locals and stall owners dressed in costumes from times gone by, along with singing, dancing, and dinner, it all takes place over a July weekend. (Editor’s note: The festival takes place on even years, so 2022 Is the next planned date – but please check).
